Search engines crawl and index incredible amounts of data from millions of websites and narrow it down to the ten most related results for people who do the research on the web. To provide relevant search results search engines like Google have to implement various tasks based on their Algorithm, a complex system that returns the best results for your research.
However, as a webmaster or a website owner, you don’t need to worry about that complicated Algorithm. Instead, you should only focus on a few factors that finally determine the order of search results.
From my own experience of SEO, I have learned the following common reasons why a website may fail to preform well in search results of search engines.
1. No backlinks
A backlink is the link from another websites that point to your website. When someone performs a search on a search engine, the search engine starts those very high quality sites. It then looks at how many reliable links each site has and places the ones with the most reliable links on the top of the search results and the ones with the least trustworthy links at the bottom.
If your site has no backlinks from other websites, search engines may not even bother look at your site to index it.
Generally, two types links are welcomed by search engines-text links and image links. However, text links are the most valuable types of links because search engines can easily read them.
2. Few internal links
Internal links are mostly neglected and undervalued by many people when optimizing their websites. Internal links can help promote healthy link equity flow in a website and make search engines to find your content.
In addition, internal links is also important to the user experience. Once you link relative articles together, you help further educate your audiences and keep them engaged for longer.
From my personal experience, I establish 70% of my links as my internal links.
3. Use more pictures than words
Although including pictures into your content is important for SEO, search engines still like words most. This is simply because a picture cannot tell what the site is about and search engines cannot enjoy a picture like human. I have seen many sites with lower ranking on search engines have placed more pictures than words. In fact, if you want the search engines to know the details about your site, you have to write more words.
4. Ignore Meta page title
I have found that many people neglect the importance of meta page tile. A meta page tile is an important factor used by search engines to decide which results to rank top for a search. It is typically a short description of what a site is about.
If you are running a site powered by WordPress, you can simply install a plugin like
WordPress SEO by Yoast and then make changes and add keywords in it.
5. Use too much keyword stuffing
As known in the SEO world, keyword stuffing is a technique that may have the potential to bring your site to the top in search engines. However, too much keyword stuffing can have the negative impact on SEO, which can bring down your rankings by search engines. In fact, people should address their keywords in an organic and natural way, avoid keyword stuffing or repeat the keywords in every other sentence.
